When an ageing farmer took archaeologist Bob Sheppard aside and pointed high into the gloomy rafters of his old hay shed, the history lover couldn’t quite believe his eyes.

For here, covered in decades of dust and spider webs, was a 140-year-old lifeboat.

The wonderfully preserved boat was all that remained from the vessel, The Maid of Lincoln, which was wrecked and sunk off Jurien Bay in 1891.
